I am absolutely disgusted with Rent, and even more disgusted with the teenage girls watching the movie. I guess that I was under the wrong impression when I thought that I was going to watch a movie that celebrated life, love and friendship. Instead I was subjected to AIDS! The Musical. I want to know who had the fucking bright idea of producing a play that trivializes AIDS by having a group of homeless, drug addicted artists dancing and singing as all but 3 of the main characters serve a death sentence. The movie completely lacked the seriousness required when dealing with that kind of subject matter. Don't get me wrong, you should celebrate life, even if you are dying, but I feel like Rent makes a mockery of the pain and suffering that accompanies an AIDS diagnosis. It's not cool and "bohemian" to be addicted to drugs, and homeless and dying of AIDS. I think that I cried through the majority of the movie.
And then there are the teenage girls who said "oooohhhhh" when the cute little transvestite did something cute or funny. Come on, I know that there is not a single person who said "oooooooooohhhhhhhhhh" that would not point, laugh, and scream "tranny faggot" if they saw one on the street. Let's get real, Rent did not celebrate life, love or friendship; it put AIDS, faggots and drug addicts on a stage to promote stereotypes for 2 1/2 hours of trivialization. I can't believe I actually paid to see a movie that paraded some of society's greatest problems on a stage for entertainment.
